November 2013

Suffering from "Camper Disease" for the last 4 years, I can't help spotting every camper wherever I travel. Sighted a Scamp in a back yard about 3-4 years ago that had not moved in that time. Well, about 5-7 weeks ago, I noticed it had moved from the back yard to the front. Curiosity took over and I stopped in to see if "it" had plans. No one at home so I left my name and address. Several weeks go by without a word and then an email arrives that the owner had been on vacation and yes she was interested in selling. Arrangements were made to go see it the next day. Although this one was also across the border, it was only about 25 miles away. Not a problem, I've bought one in New Brunswick before.

The wife accompanies me and this is what we find...

A little negotiating and it is ours. In a few days we can get the registrations and it will be home by the end of the week.

Luckily it fits in the garage sideways, after 4 years of having to leave a vehicle outdoors in the winter because of constant rebuilds, ALL is now sheltered.

A few pics of "as found".

11-17-13 First day in the shop. Removed an improperly installed tongue jack, cut off a now working electrical hookup and removed all the cushions. Upon closer inspection, looks like at least one section of flooring needs to be replace. No idea how this is attached yet???
11-24-13 Well, the destruction has started....

Above is under the front bunk area, floor is good but the wall mounted supports for the bench and the upper bunk area were in bad shape due to window seal leak.

Below is the floor under the counter area, fairly certain this is all result of internal leak, water supply and or drain???

All rot removed, what looks like broken edges is portion of the underlying fiberglass, will keep this and add new fiberglass over it when the new wood is in.

As I've said before, parts is parts.....
The counter and the front bunk area. Really cooling off now, down into the teens and will me most of the week, may not do too much of a while, we'll see.....

New under counter floor fitted in but not yet installed.

Old roof vent removed  and ready to be cleaned up.

Does look weird seeing the ceiling of the garage but you can see down into the camper.

New front bunk and bench brackets sawed out.

Dec-Jan2014
Making some progress as weather and time allow. Removed some of the old for replacement, i.e the tank water fill, all running side lights, electrical entrance, shore water connection.

The curb side dinette bench removed. This area will be cleaned up and the water tank moved to the left slightly to make room for a 12 V DC pump.

I also removed the old lights on each end of the cabinet. Two new LED ones installed under the cabinet to provide light to the work area, and a new double LED over the table along with 12V receptacle. Also, installed a second circuit breaker to have an outlet under the sink for a frig and place to plug in a battery charger. Also, an exterior ground fault outlet left of the entrance door, haven't put this one in yet.  I've also run the wiring for the water pump. All the new DC wiring will go to a fuse panel up front under the bench area. These days the original wiring would be found
"lacking".

Second week Jan 2014

Wired up new plug in power cord for the new Marinco entrance. Also, ran wire to new outside outlet which has been cut out and fitted in, and under counter outlet and soldered wire connection to running lights and signal lights.

The new  DC fuse "box", a standard 110 box will make a nice protected area. Instead of one DC power circuit, will have one for counter lights, dinette and 12 V plug, and water pump, the fourth will be to feed a charger back to the battery.
This week my new water pump and water screen arrived, will fit these in with new water lines but not install until I've put new primer on the floor and will use bubble aluminum insulation under all this on that compartment floor.

New wood and insulation under sink cabinet and insulation under and behind front couch/bunk.

All "bad" wood replaced, primed, new insulation where needed, start of new wiring.

Beginning if sanding and prep for painting.

I have not done as good a job in getting as many photos as on past rebuilds, but included in this one:
new 12 V water pump, outside receptacle added, new water fill, new roof skylight, new tires, all new exterior trim, new door lock and hinges, new Lexan windows both front and rear with new seals all the way around, added 110 V frig and cut out venting for it, new vinyl floor, new side marker lights, added new battery charger/maintainer. additional lighting 2 above table and above counter, all LEDS, new propane lines and gas regulator, new battery box, new safety chains and front jack, removable shore power cable and connections. I'm sure there's more. My object is to have a camper with no known defects and ready to go to the best of my ability.

All pictures below are of the finished product.

Had some fun with this with my grandson who assisted with the restoration and a few bird hunting trips in it.
